Women, Kenyon Men Claim NCAC Titles
CANTON, Ohio The Denison University women have
done something only on other team has done in 20 years of North
Coast
Athletic Conference swimming competition win a women s
NCAC Swimming &Diving Championship.The Big Red women won
four events and recorded 33 top-five finishes to total 1,604 points
to best perennial champion Kenyon.The Ladies won 11 events to
finish second with 1,548.50 points.Wooster placed third,for the
seventh year in a row,with 1,083.50 points.Wittenberg placed fourth
with 957 points,followed by Ohio Wesleyan (590),Allegheny (576),Hiram
(425)and Oberlin (406)in positions five through eight,
respectively.
The Lords won nine events and recorded 35 top-five
finishes to total 1,580 points to best perennial runner-up Denison.The
Big Red
men recorded six first-place finishes to go with 28 top-five finishes
on the way to 1,513 points and their 18th second-place finish.
Wabash placed third with 796 points;Wooster compiled 758.50 points
to place fourth,followed by Wittenberg (718),Allegheny
(638.50),Oberlin (494),Hiram (381.50)and Ohio Wesleyan (306.50)in
positions five through nine,respectively.The Lords,who
have claimed 24 consecutive NCAA Division III titles,have won 19
of 20 NCAC crowns and 50 of their last 51 conference
championship meets.
Kenyon freshman Jessica Connors (Cedarburg,WI/Divine
Savior Holy Angels)established a new mark with her win in the 200
breaststroke (2:21.44).
Hiram sophomore Beth Groselle (Hiram,OH/Crestwood)was
named Female Swimmer of the Year in balloting by the league
coaches.In addition to the 100 free (51.86),she earned a conference
championship in the 100 breast (1:05.4)and met the NCAA
Division III automatic qualifying standards in both events.
Kenyon senior Marc Courtney-Brooks (Columbus,OH/St.Charles
Prep)was named Male Swimmer of the Year by league
coaches after setting NCAC marks in the 200 IM (1:52.43),100 free
(45.44)and 200 free (1:37.86)as the anchor in the winning 800
free relay.He also claimed a win in the 100 back (51.48).
Allegheny senior Kelley Anderson (Beaver,PA/Beaver)won
her seventh and eighth NCAC championships with wins in the one-
(402.65)and three-meter (433.60)boards to become the first female
four-time NCAC Female Diver of the Year,Wittenberg freshman
Cody Nicely (Knoxville,TN/Bearden)claimed the one-meter board (309.40)to
earn Male Diver of the Year honors.
Denison s Gregg Parini swept the Women s
and Men s Coaches of the Year,respectively.Denison s
Anne Gillie was named
Women s Diving Coach of the Year after her divers finished
second,third and fourth on both boards.Wittenberg s Ian Hershey
was
named Men s Diving Coach of the Year.
